Governance at its Best - the NYMIR Board of Governors
NYMIR strongly believes in the concept of subscriber ownership a belief that governs our day-to-day activities.
A 13-member board of governors, comprised of elected and appointed municipal officials, manages NYMIR. Elected by subscribers, and serving on a voluntary basis, the Board of Governors essentially bring forward the suggestions and concerns of the members. Charged with the task of ensuring the health of the reciprocal, the Board sets the overall policy for the reciprocal by developing strategies, establishing the budget and directing marketing and risk management efforts. Board meetings are held four times each year, including an annual meeting in May.
Continuing a hands-on tradition of governance, Board members also meet with the reciprocal’s actuaries, auditors and rating agencies.
Four subcommittees, which meet on a quarterly basis, further assist the Board in exercising its responsibilities:
- Finance Committee oversees funding levels, financial results and monitors large losses;
- Planning and Development is responsible for marketing NYMIR and reviewing NYMIR publications;
- Rules oversees risk management activities, interprets and analyzes by-laws and resolutions, and
- Executive Committee consists of the president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and past-president.
The New York Conference of Mayors, Association of Towns, and the Association of Counties serve as the Attorney-in-Fact.
